What could I possibly say about this year that hasn’t already been said, felt, or experienced by so many people? The world was irreparably changed by the COVID-19 pandemic, and countless individuals, families, and communities have been challenged in innumerable ways. Like most everyone else, I’ve had my share of struggles, too. But I would much rather reflect on the positive memories of the past 12 months and embrace them as inspiration for prosperity in the coming year ahead. Also, some friends within the speculative fiction writing community recommended that I consolidate my recent publications into a single blog post to signal boost any potential award consideration for which my stories may be eligible. I humbly do so here in the spirit of embracing the complete experience of publishing and for being a part of such an inspirational community of artists and creators. Now, with all that said, here are a few of my personal highlights from 2020, including my first-ever short story publications.

“Good Boy” — Metaphorosis Magazine

In July, I received an acceptance notification from Metaphorosis Magazine for my short story, “Good Boy.” It’s a science fiction tale about an existential threat to humanity, which is viewed from the perspective of a loyal and intrepid canine, and spans several generations of hope and hardship. Metaphorosis published it in October, making it my first-ever published work of fiction. I’m incredibly proud of the story and to have seen its long-gestating concept come to fruition. Recently, Metaphorosis’s editor, B. Morris Allen, informed me that “Good Boy” was selected for the publication’s “Best of 2020” anthology. I am absolutely elated by this honor, and I’m incredibly grateful for this additional opportunity to have others experience my first published story. The anthology is scheduled to be released in early February 2021.

“Orbital Lullaby” — All Worlds Wayfarer

I had one other short story published in 2020. “Orbital Lullaby” debuted in Issue VII of All Worlds Wayfarer. It’s an intimate look into the struggles of a family unit within a science fiction setting, specifically focusing on the challenge of parenting amidst incredible hardship. “Orbital Lullaby” deals with some serious topics and I intended for it to elicit powerful emotions, while also showcasing the power of hope and perseverance. Of all the fiction I’ve written in my life, this story is my most personal, and I’m both very proud and humbled that it found a home within the pages of a stellar speculative fiction publication like All Worlds Wayfarer.

A New Arrival

Finally, I’d be remiss if I didn’t reiterate the most joyous news of the year for me and my family. In the summer, my wife and I welcomed our second child into the world—another daughter, to boot. It appears that I am destined to live in a house full of women (including our dog), and I wouldn’t have it any other way. Our second child is, in so many ways, incredibly similar to her older sister: inquisitive, fearless, and loving. My children are the greatest joys in my life, and I can’t wait for our shared adventures in the coming year.

Looking Ahead To 2021

For me, the new year will kick off in a fantastic way with the publication of my next short story, “Our New Artifacts,” in Issue 6 of Wizards In Space Literary Magazine. I’ve been a fan of Wizards In Space for a while, and I’m thrilled that my latest story will be featured within its pages. Look for that to be released sometime in January.

I wish you all a pleasant final few days of 2020, as well as a productive, healthy, and happy new year in 2021.
