I’m M. Douglas White, and it’s a pleasure to meet you. This site is the home of my fiction writing projects, and its aim is to help me connect with other aspiring writers and fans of speculative fiction. Throughout my life, I’ve been a voracious reader and fan of the written word, and I’ve been fortunate to pay most of my bills by stringing together sentences in one form or another. I’ve worked as a journalist, magazine editor, copywriter, salesperson, customer service representative, and more. These days, I’m a marketing professional in an industry that I love, one that encourages people to strive for an active and healthy lifestyle while being mindful of the natural world. I hold degrees in English and History, as well as an MBA with an emphasis on business writing. My professional written work has appeared in trade and consumer magazines, corporate websites and blogs, outdoor industry journals, and other outlets.
I’ve always loved getting lost in tales of science fiction and fantasy. However, I enjoy reading all genres of literature and nonfiction. I often tried writing my own fictional stories, but I always seemed to lack the confidence to share them with others—apart from an annual Halloween scary story contest organized by a group of dear friends. Journalism and other nonfiction projects were much more in my comfort zone. Well, that all changed when I became a father for the first time and I discovered a newfound confidence to experiment with prose. Later, my interest in writing and other personal creative pursuits doubled when my wife and I welcomed the arrival of our second child. To learn more about what inspired me to start writing more often and create this website, check out this blog post.
I’m an outdoors enthusiast. Hiking, camping, backpacking, cycling, and surfing being my absolute favorite activities that don’t directly involve reading or writing. Paradise for me is sitting atop a quiet mountain, under a desert sky, or on a serene beach, either in the company of loved ones or alone with a good book in hand. I live in Southern California with my wife, two daughters, and dog. Three of my many life-long goals are to publish a full-length novel; appear on the television quiz show Jeopardy! (Which I did! Click here to read about it.); and visit every National Park in the United States. I’ve toured through 19 countries apart from my home nation, and I hope to experience as many others as I possibly can. Thankfully, my wife is an avid traveler, too, and we’re eager to expose our young children to the wondrous diversity of the world (we got off to a great start by taking our oldest daughter, who was nine months old at the time, on a whirlwind tour through Scandinavia). I also enjoy landscape photography, and most of the images you see on this site are my own.
When it comes to my writing style, I enjoy exploring humanity’s connection to the natural world, as well as the connections forged by individuals as we all hurtle towards an uncertain and fragile future. And if you’re interested in supporting the publications that have provided me and many other fantastic writers a platform for sharing their tales with the world, check out my Amazon author page.
Finally, I’d love to connect with more aspiring writers and speculative fiction fans. So you can find me on Goodreads, as well as Twitter and Instagram.
Cheers,
M.
